Star Wars Outlaws May Be Letting On More About Its Game Structure

Star Wars Outlaws is an open-world adventure that, like many Star Wars titles before it, seems to follow a familiar pattern. Star Wars Outlaws will feature the new protagonist Kay Vess and will follow her story of performing the biggest heist in the Outer Rim, and in the recent story trailer that Ubisoft released there were many hints about the game’s structure.

The trailer showcased lots of fun and interesting story beats, from meeting Jabba the Hutt to the return of an unexpected character from Solo: A Star Wars Story. Star Wars Outlaws looks to be filled with a strong narrative and fun gameplay and with all the hints and dialogue in the story trailer, the structure still seems fairly obvious, which could be kind of a letdown.

Star Wars Outlaws’ Game Structure Might Be A Little Obvious

The Potential Structure of Star Wars Outlaws

Star Wars Outlaws’ recent story trailer may have let on more about the game and narrative structure than it should have, even for a simple story, such as protagonist Kay Vess seeking crew members to help her with the heist. Due to this, the potential structure as teased by the trailer could be something along the lines of the following:

  • Act 1: Tutorial sequence and inciting incident.
  • Act 2: Find crew members, which is likely where the open world becomes accessible.
  • Act 3: Perform the heist, possibly as a point of no return.

It’s possible that the game’s actual structure won’t be as simple as it sounds, though. As with many games, there are trials and tribulations for characters and things are never straightforward. For example, in Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Cal Kestis was after a holocron that held data on young Force-sensitives in the galaxy, but the antagonists and various obstacles kept getting in his way; in the end, Cal decides to destroy the item anyhow.

Finding Crew Members Will Likely Have Twists and Turns

As with many games with a strong narrative, the core part of the story is rarely straightforward, and players usually need to navigate many twists and turns to reach the end goal. There will likely be several main story missions involved in Kay finding the right crew, and there will likely be a story arc for each crew member.

It is also highly probable that this part of the game is when the open world becomes accessible, thus giving the player lots to do while they make their journey to finding the right crew for the heist. Outlaws is Star Wars‘ first open-world game and as such it will need to be upheld by plenty of side missions and exploration, making up the meat of the game.

Star Wars Outlaws’ Narrative Structure Could Have Plot Twists

Further, it’s likely that Star Wars Outlaws will have some interesting plot twists. There are many opportunities for twists in the game, from a potential crew member betraying Kay to her being captured by the enemy. Albeit a far-fetched plot twist, it also isn’t out of the realm of possibility that Han Solo could have a bigger role than being a stoic carbonite cameo.

Moreover, all sorts of mishaps could occur and the heist is almost assuredly not going to go off without a hitch. All in all, the game’s structure will likely feature lots of obstacles and twists at the hands of the four criminal organizations that have been confirmed to appear in Star Wars Outlaws, so the story hopefully won’t be as cut and dried as its recent trailer was.
