For the longest time now, Jon Jones has been viewed as one of the greatest fighters of all time. The former UFC light heavyweight king has never officially been beaten inside the Octagon and given some of the names he’s faced along the way, that’s a pretty impressive feat.
Of course, the Jon Jones story stretches far beyond anything that happened in active competition, with many stories being told of his controversies with USADA and the law.
There are plenty of fans out there who have a split view on Jones and his career, with the majority acknowledging his greatness as an athlete while simultaneously condemning some of the things he’s done.
It’s a balancing act, for sure, and it’s one that’ll continue for as long as people still remember his name and what he’s contributed to the sport of mixed martial arts.
One man who has been watching Jon for longer than most is none other than Joe Rogan, one of the voices of the UFC.
He’s had ‘Bones’ on his podcast in the past and during a recent episode, Joe went into detail about a conversation he had with the 35-year-old once upon a time.
Video: Joe Rogan gave Jon Jones some advice
“He’s a wild man. I had a conversation with Jon when all that s*** was going down and I said listen dude, I called him up, I said you are a wild motherf***er – and that’s the type of guy that becomes the greatest of all time. You don’t get to be the greatest of all time just being a normal person. I go that’s just who you are, maybe you made mistakes, you’ve done stupid s***, but you’re still the greatest motherf***er of all time and you could show the world. Bounce back from this and show the world.”
The next chapter
As part of his chat with Will Harris, Rogan was discussing the proposed comeback of Jones at heavyweight after almost three years out of action.
The match-up in question would see him battle it out with former UFC heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic, but regardless of who his opponent turns out to be, this is going to be a huge uphill climb for a man who hasn’t fought at this weight class before.
