Gear durability is one of the main things players should always be worrying about in Fallout 76. A broken gun or piece of armor won’t do much in a fight, and if all your gear breaks down, you’ll have better luck running away than trying to fight whatever the Appalachian wasteland is throwing at you.
Repairing items is a simple task, but unfortunately, that doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s easy. If you’re just starting out and want to keep your best early Fallout 76 gear in tip-top shape, here’s a guide to help you out.

Fallout 76 is seeing a major resurgence in popularity on Xbox according to market researcher Circana, following the premiere of Amazon’s Fallout show.
How to Repair Weapons and Armor in Fallout 76
To repair your gear, all you need to do is visit an appropriate workbench anywhere in the wasteland. Interact with a Weapon Workbench to repair weapons, and an Armor Workbench for protective gear. If you want to fix some broken pieces for Fallout 76’s Power Armor suits, you’ll have to get to a Power Armor Station. All of these workbenches can be crafted and placed in your CAMP, provided you’ve unlocked the plans for them.
Walk up to a workbench, and press the button on-screen that says “Modify/Repair.” This will open up a menu containing the gear you have in your inventory. Select the item you want to fix, then press the button shown at the bottom of your screen that says “Repair.” You may need to press another button after that — pay attention to the buttons at the bottom of your screen so you don’t get confused.
It’s best to repair weapons and armor in your CAMP or any other location where you can access your personal stash, such as train stations and the Whitespring Mall. Here, workbenches will automatically draw resources from your stash or scrap box.
Repairing gear will cost resources, which means you’ll have to farm a lot of junk in Fallout 76. The type and quantity of resources needed changes depending on the type and level of the item you’re trying to fix. As a general rule, make sure to have these materials handy at all times:
- Steel
- Aluminum
- Ballistic Fiber
- Cloth
- Adhesive
- Screw
- Crystal
If you don’t want to spend resources, or if you don’t want to fast travel to a place with workbenches available, you could always use Repair Kits. These can be used anywhere, and they will restore the durability of whatever item you use them on. To do so, inspect a piece of gear from your inventory, then do the same steps mentioned above. Repair Kits are sold in the Atomic Shop, though they can sometimes be dropped by bosses in events like Scorched Earth, Encryptid, and Project Paradise.
