The Lidl-Trek rider was part of a breakaway of five riders along with Xandro Meurisse, Andrea Vendrame, Roger Adria and Xabier Mikel Azparren who still had a 2'30″ lead before the final ascent towards the Marécottes. Azparren was the first to be left behind on this last climb.

Adria was the second to let go while in the peloton, Luke Plapp went on the offensive alongside Florian Lipowitz. If the German finally gave in, the Australian champion returned to the front and accelerated directly.

Only Nys and Vendrame could follow to the line. In the sprint, the Belgian was the strongest in front of Vendrame and Plapp. The peloton finally crossed the line 16 seconds behind, settled by Ayuso ahead of Vlasov and Adam Yates.

The Tour de Romandie is the resumption event for Nys, more accustomed to cyclo-cross since the start of his career. Last year, he notably won the Koppenberg cyclo-croos as well as the Waterloo World Cup round.
