Some defense shells Another Crab’s Treasure players can collect are great for certain areas of the game or because of how long Kril can effectively use them, like the Coconut. Others, like the Matryoshka, might not have the most defensive stats but offer ridiculously powerful shell abilities that can help turn the tide of battle while keeping Kril safe.
5 Coconut

The Coconut shell is one of the best shells for defense not necessarily for the end game, but for the early and mid game. You can find a Coconut very early in the game and it will likely carry you through the majority of the first half of Another Crab’s Treasure thanks to its high defense and half-decent shell ability.
The downside of the Coconut is that it is of the Large weight class, which affects Kril’s agility and roll effectiveness. It is outclassed by better defense shells Another Crab’s Treasure players can get later on, but for the early to middle of the game, Kril can rely on the Coconut for good defenses.
4 Thimble (& Any Shell With Fortify)

The Thimble offers players a very high Defense value and the Medium weight class, which means Kril’s dodge rolls will feel normal – or at least not slow, as happens when using a Large shell. But just like with most of the best defense shells in Another Crab’s Treasure, the real draw of this shell is its shell ability.

The Fortify ability lets Kril completely negate any instance of incoming damage as long as he is blocking for the next three instances. This buff doesn’t last too long, but time it correctly (and get under that shell quickly) to completely negate even the strongest of enemy attacks.
3 Knight’s Helmet

The Knight’s Helmet is one of the highest defense shells in Another Crab’s Treasure with a staggering 70 Defense. Though it is of the Large weight class, Kril won’t have to worry about dodging as much as long as he is hiding behind the strong steel of this helmet-turned-shell.
The shell ability Juggernaut is pretty useful, but ultimately the draw of this shell is its abnormally high Defense value. Pick this up in an out-of-the-way area in the Old Ocean, a later-game zone that can’t be accessed until the map is complete.
2 The Valve

The Valve is, like the Helmet, one of the highest-defense shells in the whole game. But though its Defense value is a fair bit lower (at 45, compared to the Knight’s Helmet’s 70), it offers another useful stat bonus: an extra 10 Resistance.

Though Another Crab’s Treasure is indeed a Soulslike, it does a lot to stand out – still, it takes inspiration from FromSoftware’s formula.
Resistance affects the damage that your shell takes when using it as a Hammer or while wearing it normally. The higher this value, the less likely Kril’s shells and Hammers are going to break. At 20 Resistance, Kril’s hammers become nigh-unbreakable, so wearing a Valve can give you a huge push towards this breaking point.
Such a huge boost to Resistance paired with the already-high 45 Defense stat means Kril hardly takes any damage while wearing the Valve.

There are a few shells in Another Crab’s Treasure that let Kril use the Decoy shell ability, but none in such a way as the Matryoshka shell. There are three different versions of the Matryoshka doll shell in Another Crab’s Treasure, each of a different size with different stats and weight class. The largest of them all (Matryoshka L) offers 40 Defense, and is of the Large size, while the smallest (Matryoshka S) has 20 Defense and is of the Small weight class.
When you get a Matryoshka shell and use its Decoy ability, the Matryoshka you were wearing functions as a Decoy as intended, while Kril automatically equips the next-smallest in the chain from Large to Small.
Because of its relatively high starting Defense stat, the ability to instantly swap to a new shell if one gets damaged, and have your old shell serve as a decoy like the Crab Husk, the Matryoshka shells are some of the game’s best for defending.
