About 40 railway lines in the Czech Republic were closed due to bad weather, with several lines closed in the Jeseník area.

Floods have halted traffic on the main railway corridor between Prague and Ostrava, Martin Kafka, a spokesman for the railway fire brigade, said, according to Prague Radio on Sunday.

Some railway lines have been closed as a precaution, while others have been damaged by flooding or fallen trees. Workers in the Jeseniko area are checking closed lines to restore service. Martin Kafka advised citizens against unnecessary travel as the unrest continues.

The mayor of the Czech city of Cesky Krumlov, on the Polish-Czech border, ordered the evacuation of several thousand residents from the city centre overnight as the Olza River, a tributary of the Oder, threatened to burst its banks.

In the city of Opava, on the Opava River, thousands of people had earlier left their homes due to the threat of massive flooding. Among the affected areas was the city’s largest high-rise apartment complex. People were also evacuated to safety in the town of Krnov and other towns.
