Have a Nice Death is the second-ever game from Montpellier, France-based Magic Design Studios. It debuted to critical acclaim in March 2023, with many reviewers praising Have a Nice Death for its addictive gameplay loop, satirical themes, and fast-paced combat. A year into its release, this distinct-looking roguelike boasts over 8,000 “Very Positive” Steam reviews, as well as a Metacritic Metascore ranging between 77 and 81, depending on the platform.
New Xbox Game Pass Game Coming July 18 Might Appeal to Zelda Fans
July 18 will see Xbox Game Pass add a day-one title that combines elements of Persona and Zelda with some absolutely stunning scenery.
Publisher Arc Games has now brought Have a Nice Death to Microsoft’s subscription service, where it debuted on April 30. As is normally the case, this release was communicated well in advance, with Microsoft’s confirming the game’s arrival as part of its Xbox Game Pass April 2024 Wave 2 lineup announcement. Have a Nice Death is now available across all non-Core tiers of the service, and can be played on both PC and the last two generations of Xbox consoles. It also comes with 37 achievements worth 1,000 Gamerscore points in total.

This release further extends the already vast collection of excellent roguelike games on Xbox Game Pass. And while Have a Nice Death has been widely touted as a stellar example of its genre, that’s not only on account of its gameplay qualities and high replay value. Instead, what makes this title truly memorable is its premise, which places players in the shoes of Death Incorporated CEO, Mr. Grim Reaper himself. The game starts with Death being buried in a mountain of paperwork caused by his minions, Sorrows, becoming a bit too enthusiastic in their efforts to make souls on Earth kick the bucket.
Each Sorrow represents a type of death, ranging from addiction and natural disasters to illness and war. The Sorrows act as Have a Nice Death‘s major bosses, with all of them having their own unique environments and serving as personified, poignant commentary on life. The overall experience plays similarly to Dead Cells, not least because of its fast-paced roguelike loop centered around conquering procedurally generated levels in between boss fights.
Have a Nice Death rounds off another release-packed month for Microsoft’s subscription service, which saw it add 17 titles to its content library. The first wave of Xbox Game Pass games for May 2024 is expected to be announced in the coming days.
