Why The Finals’ Terminal Attack 5v5 Game Mode May Not Last

The Finals’ Terminal Attack 5v5 mode was announced a few hours ago to much fanfare. This seems to be the fourth “permanent” mode that Embark Studios will add to The Finals, but there’s a chance it may not last forever. Briefly, teams will be split into two, Attackers and Defenders, and will face each other in delivering or protecting a Decryption Key. The entire match will have a best-of-seven-rounds system.




Players around the world will get to experience it on May 2, 2024. This means that The Finals’ 5v5 Power Shift mode added with the launch of Season 2 in March 2024 may temporarily see lower interest. As per Steam Charts, the FPS title’s 30-day player average currently stands at 119,889 — a 6.38% drop. With the new mode coming in a couple of days, the numbers will likely see some improvement.

The Finals’ Terminal Attack 5v5 Game Mode Risks Increasing Frustration


The Finals’ Terminal Attack 5v5 mode is a take on the classic FPS offering, Search and Destroy. The aim is to deliver a Decryption Key to the Terminal, with players either attacking or defending. That on its own sounds quite engaging, but there’s a catch. In line with the classic rules and the game’s popular environment destruction level, there won’t be any revives or healing. This, when paired with seven rounds, is why the Terminal Attack mode may see many, many rage quits.

The Finals is probably best known for its successful destruction and stealth elements. Almost all the structures are completely destructible, which means new lines of sight for snipers, movement routes, chaos and debris filling the screen, and more. The Heavy builds’ weapons like the Sledgehammer and the RPG are quite adept at this job, and can take down even other tanks in two hits.


Aside from destruction, the various class specializations make the gameplay unique. Since the Medium class’ Healing Beam ability and the Defibrillator gadget will not play a part, things will get really difficult for the team as a whole. Navigating the Terminal Attack 5v5 game mode in The Finals will get especially tricky considering the Light build’s Vanishing Bomb gadget and the Cloaking Device specialization are very meta right now.

With most teams running three or more Lights in the 5v5 Power Shift mode, invisible sneak attacks lead to many rage quits. This often happens even when there is unlimited healing and respawns. Considering that this won’t be the case in The Finals’ new game mode, the gameplay risks getting much more toxic. While things may be different if a group of friends play Terminal Attack among themselves via a Private Match, online lobbies might become increasingly difficult.


The Finals’ Terminal Attack Should Start with Locked Specializations

At this point, it is not known whether players will have to earn specializations as they progress through the seven rounds in The Finals’ Terminal Attack 5v5 game mode. However, considering a best-of-seven system will be in place, it would make sense if teams have to unlock abilities and maybe even gadgets along the way. This would ensure that Light class meta builds with Cloaking Device, Vanishing Bombs, Swords, and so on don’t end rounds as soon as they start.


Aside from that, having a fixed loadout and roles, say two Lights, two Medium, and one Heavy, would balance out teams. Running multiple Medium builds in The Finals is also very meta. There’s perhaps nothing more frustrating (or amusing, depending on the side) than seeing a trio of players constantly healing each other into invincibilty or completely covered the Power Shift mode’s platform in Guardian and APS Turrets.

If players have to earn Coins to unlock specializations and gadgets, the natural progression through the rounds will be more satisfying. If Embark maintains the level of destruction without map resets, this will add to the fun. These two factors could ensure that each round builds upon the last, while the economy adds a fresh facet to gameplay, new plays are developed and routes mapped, and more. Terminal Attack isn’t meant to be a limited-time mode in The Finals, so it’s important to keep such quality-of-life measures in mind for the long run. Otherwise, teams will likely run the same winning strategy one after another and the experience will get repetitive quite soon.


The Finals’ Terminal Attack May Deal a Major Blow to Medium Class

In The Finals’ new mode, there will be no revives, no healing, and no respawns within a round. This means that the best weapons for The Finals Medium class will be put through their paces once again, and the very reason that most players choose this role, use of the Healing Beam specialization and the Defibrillator gadget, will no longer be in play. The Guardian Turret ability sees a lot of interest, as do devices like APS Turrets, Jump Pads, and such, but they usually play second fiddle.


With the most favored Medium build gadget and specialization out of the way, mains will be forced to look elsewhere. The Finals’ gameplay is fast-paced and punishing, and changing the most used-to way of playing will push a lot of players out of their comfort zones, which might understandably frustrate some. It is thus imperative that Embark adds sub-rules or additional gadgets/specialization to compensate the loss and temper any criticism.

If that doesn’t come to pass, the Guardian Turret specialization may see the most use in The Finals‘ Terminal Attack 5v5 mode. The Dematerializer can help create new routes for teams and open up more plays, so there’s a good chance that higher skill lobbies may see more of this than the Guardian Turret. Given the mode’s inspiration, it is expected to bring in more veteran FPS fans than was the case so far.


In any case, The Finals‘ Season 2’s new mode may deal a major blow to the Medium class if no compensation for Healing Beam and Defibrillator is added. Terminal Attack will drop on May 2, so players won’t have to wait long to find out more.
