Tour of Hungary: Mark Cavendish wins the 2nd stage in a sprint, Martin Voltr takes the overall lead

Siebe Deweirdt (Flanders-Baloise) was part of today's breakaway, with Martin Voltr, the Hungarian Zsolt Istlstekker (Epronex-Hungary) and the Italian Christian Bagatin (MBH Bank Colpack Ballan). The latter was the last rider to be caught by the peloton, a little less than nine kilometers from the finish.

Ideally launched by his teammates, Cavendish was a few centimeters ahead of the Dutchman Dylan Groenewegen (Jayco AlUla) and the Spaniard Jon Abersasturi (Euskaltel – Euskadi).

At 38, Cavendish wins the 164th victory of his professional career, the second in 2024 after a success at the Tour of Colombia in February. Cavendish had already finished sixth in the first stage on Wednesday.

The Briton also took second place overall behind Voltr and Groenewegen completed the podium 9 seconds behind the leader.

The 3rd stage, on Friday, will start from Kazincbarcika and arrive in Gyöngyös-Kékesteto after an ascent of 12.1 km at 5.6%. The 45th edition of the Tour of Hungary will end on Sunday in Pécs. The Swiss Marc Hirshi won last year.
