Sucker Punch Clarifies Ghost of Tsushima PSN Account Requirements

Highlights

  • Sucker Punch clarifies PSN account usage for Ghost of Tsushima on PC, ensuring single player mode remains unaffected by recent controversies.
  • Fans were likely relieved to hear that a PSN account is not required for Ghost of Tsushima single player.
  • However, connecting a PSN account is required for those who wish to use the PlayStation overlay or jump online into Legends mode.

In response to the recent negativity surrounding Helldivers 2 and PlayStation Network account requirements, Sucker Punch issued a statement in an attempt to clarify its use in the upcoming PC version of Ghost of Tsushima. It’s been a rough few days for Arrowhead Game Studios, who took the brunt of the controversy surrounding a recent announcement that would require Helldivers 2 players to link to a PSN account. The backlash was so severe that Helldivers 2 was actively review bombed on Steam, the refund policy was changed, and ultimately, Sony issued a statement abandoning its PSN plans.

With one controversy now over, all eyes have turned back towards Sucker Punch, who, alongside Nixxes, is preparing to launch a PC port of Ghost of Tsushima in the coming weeks. Already, Sucker Punch has attempted to prepare for Ghost of Tsushima‘s launch, though the update seems to have had an unintentional side effect on the game’s framerate. With tensions between the gaming community and Sony still running high at the moment, Sucker Punch issued a statement in an attempt to clarify how the PSN account would be used.

Ghost of Tsushima Releases New Update, But It Seems to Be Causing Problems

The latest update for Ghost of Tsushima makes key changes and prepares Crossplay for PC players, but also adds in an unintentional side effect.

Taking to social media, one fan revealed that they had canceled their Ghost of Tsushima pre-order on Steam due to the recent PSN controversies with Helldivers 2. Thanking them for their feedback, Sucker Punch responded by clarifying how a PSN account would be used for the Steam version of the game. Considering the single player nature of Ghost of Tsushima, Sucker Punch has a bit of good news for fans.

Does Ghost of Tsushima Require a PSN Account on Steam?

In its response, Sucker Punch confirmed that a PSN Account is not required in order to play through the single player campaign of Ghost of Tsushima. However, it will be required to utilize the recently revealed PlayStation overlay for Ghost of Tsushima, allowing fans to earn trophies, see their friends, and account profile as well. In addition, linking to a PSN Account is also required for those who want to jump online to play the multiplayer co-op Legends mode.

The confirmation should put fans at ease, and getting out ahead of any potential controversies tied to a PSN account was a smart move. However, the PC port of Ghost of Tsushima hasn’t been controversy-free following its announcement. There has been a faction of PlayStation fans who have seemingly become frustrated by Sony’s decision to bring some of its biggest games to other platforms, such as Steam. While there’s no doubt a large faction of players happy to experience the game on an alternative platform, it doesn’t appear that Sony is going to stop releasing PC ports anytime soon, as these releases have become big hits for the company.
