Sam Van Rossom will retire at the end of the season: “The time has come”

Sam Van Rossom returned to Ostend this season, the club of its beginnings in 2005, after fifteen years spent abroad: ten in Valencia, three in Zaragoza in Spain, and two in Pesaro in Italy. With Valencia, the Gantois won the Spanish national title (2017) and the Eurocup, the second European cup, twice (2014 and 2019).

The ex-Belgian Lion was also Belgian champion with Ostend in 2006 and 2007. He still hopes to win a new title this season with the coastal club, which would be Ostend's 13th in a row. Leader in the standings at the end of the first two phases of the championship, Ostend will begin the playoffs for the title of Belgian champion on Wednesday against Louvain.

The goal of one last title with Ostend before retirement

“It is not finished yet”, says Sam Van Rossom. “We are having a very good season. We must now try to be crowned in the playoffs. We can still win two titles. This is the goal I set for myself,” adds the Ghent resident, referring to the national title and the BNXT League title.

Sam Van Rossom also participated in four final stages of the Euro with the Belgian Lions, before his international retirement in 2022. Now that his departure from the courts has been announced, he does not yet know what he will do next. “There are several small projects on the table, but I don’t know yet what exactly I will do”, he said. “I will definitely still do basketball-related things, but more on a daily basis. As far as becoming a coach, I always said no. “You should never say never, but coaching is not part of my future plans”.
