The New York Giants have been linked heavily in the rumor mill this offseason to potential trades and interest in this year’s quarterback prospects. With the 2024 NFL Draft approaching, Giants general manager Joe Schoen might’ve shed light on how the first three picks will unfold on strategy.

NFL general managers always parse their words for the media, using the microphone and reporters to try and play mind games with other teams. While there is some truth in everything that is said, each decision-maker is also using the platform to try and influence things in their favor.

Days ahead of the 2024 NFL Draft, New England Patriots director of scouting Eliot Wolf announced that the team is ‘open for business‘ with the third overall pick. New England has been entertaining offers throughout the offseason on its first-round pick, much like the Washington Commanders. However, similar to the Commanders, the offers for the coveted pick have been deemed insufficient.

It’s a big part of the reason why Commanders general manager Adam Peters told reporters this week the team is close to a decision and the organization feels “great about staying at No. 2.” It also could be some of the reasoning for comments from Schoen this week.

At a press conference this week, Schoen expressed his belief that no one with a top 3 pick is willing to move down right now. The assessment is based on his conversations with the teams and some dialogue with peers around the league.

“I don’t think anyone is willing to move right now.”

It’s well-known that the Chicago Bears are drafting USC Trojans quarterback Caleb Williams with the first overall pick. While Washington entertained the idea of moving down, its need for a new face of the franchise always made that unlikely. Now, the Commanders are choosing between Drake Maye and Jayden Daniels.

As for New England, despite the weakness of its roster relative to other teams picking atop the NFL Draft, there is a desire to find a franchise-caliber quarterback. While there might be some receptiveness to moving down, the Patriots’ asking price is reportedly high and that could be influencing teams like the Giants and Minnesota Vikings to believe the Bears, Commanders and Patriots will all stay put and draft quarterbacks.
