League of Legends’ New PvE Mode Has a Lot to Learn From Overwatch 2

On April 8, League of Legends fans got a glimpse of approaching features in a recent developer update. The Riot Games blog post teased updates to Arena, Ranked changes, and most interestingly, a new PvE mode. While the blog itself was light on details, a first-look video from the League of Legends YouTube channel provided some valuable information.

First revealed in January, League of Legends‘ upcoming PvE mode is now expected to launch sometime this summer. Though it’s reminiscent of past PvE modes like Star Guardian Invasion and Odyssey: Extraction, it seems Riot is deviating from its usual format by taking inspiration from bullet-heaven survivor games, like Vampire Survivors. However, while taking on swarms of enemies solo, or with friends, is an enticing offer, League of Legends should take care to learn from the pitfalls of Overwatch 2‘s PvE struggles.

League of Legends Can’t Repeat Overwatch 2’s Mistakes

Overwatch 2 Can Be A Learning Experience For Other Developers Looking To Create PvE Modes

Though there were various reasons for the criticism surrounding Overwatch 2‘s PvE modes, the most prominent of these was the continuous lack of support. For instance, after the Invasion missions were released in Season 6, Blizzard neglected to update the mode for seven months. It was only in Season 9 that the developers thought of moving the missions tab to a smaller slot.

While there were ways that Overwatch 2 could have continued to breathe life into its PvE mode over the months, the ongoing silence from Blizzard has led to speculation that Overwatch 2‘s campaign mode is being quietly canceled once again. Unfortunately, this is following the decision to abandon the original version of the promised PvE mode, which included skill trees, and the paid access model for the current story missions. With these missteps, it seems Blizzard may have missed its chance to win back player trust via a strong PvE experience.

League of Legends Upcoming PvE Mode Needs To Be A Priority

League of Legends‘ diverse champion pool and the enduring popularity of Arcane, an animated series that delved deeper into the world’s lore, present a strong opportunity for a fresh and compelling PvE mode. However, the struggles of Overwatch 2‘s PvE development undoubtedly serve as a cautionary tale. If Riot Games wants to ensure a smooth player experience, it should learn from the hardships of Blizzard.

Both League of Legends and Overwatch 2 boast rich character universes with dedicated fanbases. While the future of Overwatch 2‘s story campaign seems uncertain at this point, League of Legends could capitalize with a strong PvE mode of its own. Building on the success of past events like Ultra Rapid Fire and One for All, Riot appears to have a good shot at creating a crowd-pleaser. Of course, the key is to avoid the mistakes of Overwatch 2, including but not limited to:

  • Unrealistic release dates
  • Prolonged development time
  • Limited content
  • Lack of replayability
  • Lack of updates/communication with the playerbase
  • Scrapped mechanics (ex. skill trees)
  • Technical issues
  • Heavy monetization
