Kendall Jenner Really Is the First Person to Wear Her 2024 Met Gala Dress, Despite Internet Debate: Source

A 1999 photo of Winona Ryder wearing a replica of the dress resurfaced after the Met Gala, causing people to dispute Jenner’s claim she was the first to wear the archival Givenchy gown

At Kendall Jenner‘s 10th Met Gala on May 6, she went all out, wearing an archival Alexander McQueen for Givenchy look from 1999.

The body-hugging gown featured a sculptural neckline and shoulders and a cutout waist and butt detail that fit the model “like a glove.” That was a good thing, because she wasn’t allowed to tailor it at all.

That’s because this vintage piece came straight from the archives for this night only and had never been worn before. Jenner revealed on the red carpet that she was the first “human” to wear the gown — it had only been fit on a mannequin before Monday.

However, after the 28-year-old made that statement, the internet resurfaced photos of Winona Ryder wearing what looks to be the same dress in 1999 for a magazine photo shoot.

Comments on the matter were mixed. Some thought it was a different dress, since the women have different body types and couldn’t be wearing the same size, while others disputed that, considering it’s an haute couture dress that probably wouldn’t have been made in multiples. Others considered that Jenner may have been misinformed about the history of her dress, while a few thought maybe Ryder was wearing a slightly different version of Jenner’s McQueen for Givenchy gown.

An industry source confirmed to PEOPLE that Ryder was, in fact, wearing a different dress. Ryder was wearing a replica of the original McQueen for Givenchy gown (Jenner’s being the original).

Jenner’s statement on the carpet about being the first human to wear the gown was true — the fashion house brought it out of the archives for her to wear on May 6, and it had never been worn prior to that.

“I made a dream list of who I would ideally want to go with, and I would have died to wear something by Alexander McQueen,” Jenner told Vogue on the carpet at the event. “It’s been sleeping for the last 25 years. It’s literally a ‘sleeping beauty.’ It’s such a special moment. I feel extremely honored that they’re allowing me to wear it.”

The theme for this year was “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” which Jenner said her dress tied into nicely because it had been tucked away for so long waiting for her.

It’s “beauty that’s been slept on,” Jenner said.
