Israel has reportedly launched an attack on Iran in the latest escalation between the two states.
US officials said overnight that an Israeli missile struck Iran in Isfahan province while Iranian media also reported explosions.
However, it is still unclear as to extent of the escalation, with Iranian state media denying it was a missile and saying that the country’s air defence systems had shot down three drones.
Iran’s state television said nuclear facilities where Iran has been conducting work – which Tehran says is peaceful but which the West believes is aimed at building a weapon – were unharmed.
The Natanz nuclear site, the centrepiece of Iran’s uranium enrichment program, is in Isfahan.
Israel had been urged not to respond to an attack by Iran carried out in response to an air strike on the Iranian embassy earlier this month that was blamed on Israel. Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi had warned Israel before Friday’s strike that Tehran would deliver a “severe response” to any attack on its territory.
The US was reportedly warned by Israel on Thursday that a strike was coming, according to CNN, along with reassurance that Iran’s nuclear facilities would not be targeted.
