Like so many of the great Metroidvanias that came before it, Animal Well allows players to explore its labyrinth-like world in pretty much any order they like. Those who venture into the top right-hand portion of the map will find themselves in the domain of the Chameleon: one of four area bosses that they’ll need to overcome in order to complete the game.

Players will see the Chameleon a few times as they navigate the area and will need to avoid its tongue and projectiles whenever they do. This ultimately proves to be good practice, as later on, they’ll have to beat the Chameleon in a fairly challenging boss fight, which some Animal Well players may find themselves having quite a bit of trouble with.
How to Beat the Chameleon Boss in Animal Well
Upon dropping down into the Chameleon’s chamber, players will notice that there are some hedgehog enemies walking along the underside of the log that they’re currently standing on. The aim here is to have the Chameleon eat all five of them, which is actually relatively straightforward once players come to understand the boss’ pattern.
During the encounter, the Chameleon will attempt to eat the player character using its tongue. It will do this three times and then fire five projectiles across the screen, after which, the cycle repeats. The projectiles will only deal one heart of damage and only one of them will hit the player if they stand perfectly still, so they’ll only really need to worry about avoiding the Chameleon’s tongue and getting it to eat the hedgehogs. Thankfully, there’s a simple strategy for that.
Players should walk in front of the first hedgehog until they hear the sound effect that players just before the Chameleon’s lick attack. As soon as they do, they’ll want to quickly move out of the way so that the tongue catches the hedgehog instead of the player character. It’s best to try and get it to eat two hedgehogs on the first cycle and then three on the second. Once all five have been eaten, the Chameleon will leave, allowing players to follow it off-screen and claim their reward.
What to Do with the V.Flame in Animal Well
In the next room, players will find a glass orb containing the V.Flame key item. After collecting it, they’ll want to make their way to the boss statue room, which is the area connecting the game’s four main zones. If they approach the Chameleon statue with the V.Flame in their inventory, they’ll be prompted to light the statue’s beacon, after which, they can move on to the next area.
