Final Fantasy 14: Blue Mage Leveling Guide

Final Fantasy 14‘s Blue Mage is an unorthodox job featuring a class-specific progression system for learning a wide variety of abilities adapted from the plethora of enemies found within the game. As one of Final Fantasy 14‘s limited jobs, Blue Mages are restricted from traditional leveling methods such as dungeons or Duty Roulettes. To compensate, they receive a large bonus to experience gained in the open world, and players are able to leverage this bonus to reach the level cap in just an hour.

While players won’t be able to bring Blue Mages into cutting-edge raids or the newest dungeons, enthusiasts will be able to take on a variety of Blue Mage-specific challenges to earn rare rewards, and the unique effects granted by their arsenal of monster abilities make them especially suited for certain tasks like farming FATEs. Those looking to get started can unlock Blue Mage by completing the level 50 quest “Out of the Blue” available in the Limsa Lominsa Lower Decks.

How to Level Blue Mage

The fastest way to level Blue Mage can be performed alone at any level and takes advantage of a unique interaction between two monsters, Deep-sea Leeches, and Clionids, found in the level 80 zone, The Tempest. When a Deep-sea Leech and Clionid are brought next to each other, the Clionid will consume the leech, killing it instantly to grant itself an Enlarge buff. By first tagging a leech with an attack or debuff and then feeding it to a Clionid by luring them close together, players can quickly earn massive amounts of experience, further boosted by Blue Mages’ inherent open-world experience bonus.

While this method can be used as early as level one, there are some risks associated with this strategy. Players just starting out should be extra careful, as the large level discrepancy means taking even a basic attack from either monster will result in instant defeat. Use of the Sprint action can help keep you ahead of both the leech and Clionid while you try to position them close enough for consumption, and equipping a spell with an instant cast time like Flying Sardine can help by allowing players to tag leeches without being forced to stand still.

As players level up and grow more resilient, they will need to be wary of the Clionid’s Enlarge buff gained by consuming each leech. If the Clionid gains 3 stacks of Enlarge, it will become Fully Enlarged, granting it access to the Buccal Clones ability that instantly kills the Clionid’s target.

Alternative Methods to Level Blue Mage

While the solo method is recommended for its speed and ability to be done alone, access to The Tempest requires players to have purchased and progressed through the Shadowbringers expansion. Those unable to take advantage of The Tempest and the Deep-sea Leech can still achieve similar results with the help of another high-level player, with the high-level player taking the role of the Clionid, following the Blue Mage player and killing any enemies they tag.

Players utilizing this group method will need to ensure that they are not in a party together and that the Blue Mage is the first character to attack an enemy. In order to make the most of this strategy, players should use the highest level zone they have access to with a dense monster population. Some options include the southern shore of Kholusia for those with access to early Shadowbringers zones, Loch Seld in The Lochs for those with access to late Stormblood zones, or Azys Lla for those with access to late Heavensward zones.
