Fallout’s Best Possible Game Setting May Never Be Explored

Highlights

  • Fallout’s settings, from New Vegas to Appalachia, play a crucial role in setting the tone and showcasing the diverse factions and threats in each game.
  • Australia could offer terrifying mutated wildlife and the treacherous Outback, making it a potentially amazing setting for a hardcore Fallout entry.
  • Sadly, Bethesda is unlikely to explore countries other than the USA, but fans may bring an Australian wasteland to life through mods.

With the Fallout franchise being back on top again, many newcomers to the long-running franchise are getting to experience some of the great settings featured in the games. The location of each new Fallout entry plays just as important of a role as the characters featured in the stories, but one of the most interesting settings to be explored will likely never be featured in a future game.

From New Vegas to the wilderness of Appalachia, Fallout‘s settings truly set the tone for each game. Additionally, each location has its own unique factions and threats that illustrate the sheer diversity of a post-nuclear America. As of now, Fallout has been completely focused on America, but on the other side of the world, Australia could provide some of the best in-game content yet.

Australia Offers the Perfect Fallout Game Setting

Since the franchise began, there have been questions about what happened to other countries after nuclear war broke out. The Fallout franchise is filled with incredible lore, but it has never ventured outside the borders of America. However, Australia presents the perfect ingredients for one of the most hardcore entries in the series yet.

Post-Nuclear Mutations in Australia’s Wildlife

Australia has become notorious for its oftentimes horrifying wildlife. Whether it’s a spider the size of someone’s head or an incredibly poisonous snake, the landscape of Australia is crawling and slithering with major threats. Adding the mutations instilled by post-war pollution could only make the animals of Australia that much more horrifying. Fallout games can be challenging, but throwing a giant mutated snake or an uber-kangaroo into the franchise would be a horror unlike any other.

Additionally, the Outback of Australia is one of the most arid and treacherous areas in the world, which makes it the perfect place to play as a character surviving a nuclear wasteland. The wastelands of Fallout are basically death traps players sometimes have to walk into, and traversing a radiated version of Australia’s Outback would not only be insane, but it would also be a brand-new perspective. Australia’s Outback and various landscapes may be harsh, but they are also beautiful, which could be a fascinating contrast.

It’s Unlikely That Fallout Will Leave America

There are plenty of compelling locations outside of America for Bethesda to explore with its next Fallout game, but it’s not likely to ever happen, according to Bethesda game director Todd Howard. In a recent interview with Kinda Funny, Todd Howard made it pretty clear that the heart of Fallout and its tone lies in America. Howard said, “My view is, part of the Fallout schtick is on the American naivete and part of that”. Although his statements do hold a lot of truth, it’s still a shame that players likely won’t get to see an in-depth look into other countries affected by the war.

schtick is on the American naivete and part of that.

Of course, there is always the chance that an Australian setting could be explored with a mod. Much like the famous Fallout: London mod that’s in development, a team of fans could someday bring an Outback wasteland riddled with radiation to life with a similar project. Although it wouldn’t be canon, it would still take advantage of the perfect opportunity to create some of the scariest mutations the Fallout franchise has ever seen.
