Fallout 4 Players Aren’t Happy About the Game’s ‘Ultrawide’ Support

Highlights

  • The Fallout 4 next-gen update disappoints fans with issues like poorly implemented ultrawide support.
  • Fans are using community-made mods to fix the stretched UI elements on ultrawide monitors until Bethesda addresses the issue.
  • Despite offering features like 60 FPS on Xbox Series X/S and PS5, the Fallout 4 next-gen update is marred by various flaws affecting gameplay.

Fallout 4 fans are very disappointed with the recently released next-gen update and some of its features, like the lackluster addition of “ultrawide” support. Despite being delayed for a long period of time, the free next-gen patch for Fallout 4 has no shortage of issues on all platforms. What should have been an easy cause for celebration among fans of the 2015 RPG has instead turned into a point of frustration and criticism towards Bethesda’s handling of this update within the Fallout community.

The Fallout franchise has had somewhat of a resurgence in recent weeks, thanks in no small part to the massive success of Amazon’s critically acclaimed live-action Fallout TV show. Nearly every game in the Fallout series has gotten a big player boost because of it on platforms like Steam. To coincide with the release of Amazon’s Fallout show, Bethesda finally unveiled a release date for the next-gen update for Fallout 4 that it announced back in 2022. Unfortunately, though, a lot of the excitement surrounding this patch has been muted thanks to a number of issues plaguing the additions in this update, with this latest problem being particularly egregious.

Fallout 4 Next-Gen Update Made the Game Worse on Steam Deck

Multiple gamers online accuse Bethesda’s recent next-gen update for Fallout 4 of causing issues for people running it on Steam Deck.

Fans have discovered that the so-called ‘ultrawide’ support added to the PC version of Fallout 4 in the next-gen update has one major problem: all the UI elements are stretched to accommodate the resolution of 21:9 and 32:9 monitors. This gives the game an ugly appearance, even on the best ultrawide gaming monitors, and makes the menus look quite rough. To make matters even worse, Fallout 4 also fails to recognize the native resolution of monitors with ultrawide resolutions if Windows display scaling settings are set to anything other than 100%, which makes this poorly implemented feature all the more frustrating.

To solve this glaring issue, fans playing the Steam version of the game on a 21:9 monitor are using an old community-made mod named TRUBY9 ULTRAWIDE that adjusts the size of UI elements to properly fit the resolution as intended. Even though the Fallout 4 next-gen update has caused mod compatibility issues across the board, as is typically the case when Bethesda updates its games, this ultrawide mod in particular still works perfectly fine. As such, it’s a must for anyone looking to play Fallout 4 on a 21:9 monitor for the time being until Bethesda fixes this issue itself.

The Fallout 4 Next-Gen Update Has Some Big Issues

The lack of proper ultrawide support is by no means the only issue with the Fallout 4 next-gen update, as fans pointed out a number of glaring problems with the patch. Not only is the game not working as well as it used to on Steam Deck, but Fallout 4‘s new quality mode also isn’t working on Xbox. In addition, PlayStation owners who obtained Fallout 4 through the PS Plus Collection on PS5 are currently unable to upgrade to the next-gen update without buying the game separately. Though there are some great features added in the Fallout 4 next-gen update, like 60 FPS on Xbox Series X/S and PS5, the number of flaws in this patch is significantly hampering its potential, according to fans.
