The current system, which provides points for 10 of the 20 drivers, makes it very difficult for small teams to get into the points, the top 10 is often monopolized by the two drivers from the top teams: Red Bull, Ferrari, Mercedes, McLaren and Aston Martin.
After five Grands Prix and one sprint race, seven drivers (Albon, Ocon, Zhou, Ricciardo, Gasly, Bottas and Sargeant) and three teams (Williams, Alpine and Kick Sauber) have no points. Haas has 5 points and RB 7.
The ranking of the manufacturers determines the amount of the prize for each team.
“I'm not against it. You can finish 11th or 20th it's the same thing, so I can understand the frustration,” said Ferrari boss Frédéric Vasseur.
Team RB's Laurent Mekies said he favored a change because “even the bottom five teams are big organizations now and it's very difficult to explain to the outside world, to our partners and our fans, that we are fighting for an 11th place which actually brings no points.”
Currently, points are distributed according to the formula 25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1. In the new format, the top seven would retain the current points (25-18-15-12-10-8-6). The next five would receive 5-4-3-2-1 points.
The points for the fastest lap in the race (1 point) and in the sprint races (8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1) will not change.
