Euro gymnastics in Rimini: a day to forget for the Belgians, with the exception of Glen Cuyle

Unsurprisingly, the provisional third place occupied by our gymnasts would then move to 14th place at the end of the day. A new disappointment after the Antwerp Worlds where the collective failed to qualify for the Games.

Too many errors and falls have, once again, punctuated the journey of our representatives who, like European vice-champion Maxime Gentges (who had to stop his exercise) and Luka Van den Keybus, were going to already marking time during the first rotation on the pommel horse.

”It's a difficult piece of equipment and unfortunately it won't bring us any luck. It’s sport!” attempts to put Waeslandian into perspective.

Victor Martinez lined up sick and did what he could, above all achieving an excellent jump which was credited with the best score tied with Noah Kuavita.

The latter, for his part, did not shine as one might have hoped on the high bar. Victim of a fall during his routine (Gentges and Martinez also fell), Noah was also guilty of a big mistake on the way out, a second fall which cost him dearly.

I made a mistake on something relatively easy for me. It’s a millimeter away!

“I am very disappointed ! I was well prepared and confident, but I made a mistake on an element that was relatively easy for me. It’s a millimeter away”deplores the Antwerp resident.

However, the team would have needed to amass points on this apparatus, where Maxime Gentges did not perform at his best level either, to still dream of this qualification maintained by good parallel bars thanks to Kuavita and Van den Keybus, our two Olympic qualifiers.

The only (big) positive point of the day came from Glen Cuyle, whose brilliant performance on the rings was rewarded with a total of 14,500 points, unfortunately insufficient to reach the individual final (he is second reserve). “I am very happy with my performance, it is the most difficult exercise I have ever presented and I did very well”underlines the person concerned.

Nicola's twin brother then injured his ankle on the ground and was unable to complete his exercise. “It was mainly out of caution”reassured those who will have a real chance of qualifying for the Games next June.
