A South American referee was also selected following a collaboration between UEFA and CONMEBOL, the South American football confederation, as for Euro 2020. The Argentinian Facundo Tello was chosen.
UEFA has also summoned twenty referees for video assistance (VAR) and twelve referees who will be able to officiate as a fourth referee or as a reserve assistant.
The referees will have their base camp in Frankfurt during the tournament while the VAR will be based in Leipzig.
Belgium, for its part, has not had a referee selected for a major tournament since the 2010 World Cup in South Africa with Frank De Bleeckere. This is the seventh major tournament without a Belgian referee. De Bleeckere was appointed as a “referee observer” during Euro 2020.
