Wilfried Kanga's opening score did not calm the public. The more traditional chants proclaiming that “We are the Standard” and inviting “777 to resign” were sometimes interrupted to salute a satisfactory phase of play.
The main fans definitely lost their patience at the hour mark. They put away their flags, left their seats and returned to the area reserved for the coaches under the mockery and teasing of the Campinois public. In a few seconds, the stand reserved for Liégeois was emptied by half. The break seemed complete, even if the equalizer in the last seconds earned the players some applause before returning to the locker room.
An inability to win after opening the score
Without being dazzling, the first period of Standard was satisfactory. The Liégeois conceded nothing defensively and brought danger, notably thanks to a particularly inspired Yeboah, whether in his deflections or his attempts at goal. The player on loan from Genoa was also the basis of a logical opening of the score by calmly playing against the Campinois defense and serving Kanga perfectly.
Unfortunately, these good intentions disappeared after the first goal. For the seventh time this season, Standard was unable to win after opening the scoring. A clear sign of the lack of confidence that drives this group but also of this inability to stay focused for ninety minutes.
Satisfaction: die-hards in the rain
We can blame the players for everything, whether it be a lack of intensity in the duels, defensive oversights or, worse, worrying technical errors, but they showed strength of character by not giving up despite a stormy context.
Standard comes back from nowhere to equalize against Westerlo in stoppage time (3-3)
Trailing by two goals in the pouring rain, they managed to find a new lease of life to come back at the end of added time. Kostas Laifis, somewhat in spite of himself, embodied this ability to rebel by saving a point after being guilty of Campin's second and third goals. A nice revenge for someone whose involvement has often been called into question since the start of the year.
