We won’t see Bill Belichick roaming the NFL sidelines as a head coach in 2024, but that doesn’t mean the future Hall of Famer won’t be returning in 2025. The man with six Super Bowl trophies to his name may not have a spot with an NFL team right now, but the 72-year-old Annapolis native still has the itch to pass George Halas and Don Shula on the league’s all-time coaching wins list.
Right now, Belichick is 16 wins behind Halas and 26 wins behind Shula. That’s at least two seasons to catch Halas and possibly three or four to catch Shula. But Belichick won’t be able to add to his win tally this season, where he’s instead expected to sign on with Peyton Manning’s Omaha Productions, providing his expert insight on the NFL.
But what about next year? As mentioned, Belichick isn’t ready to throw in the towel on his coaching career. Instead, as ESPN reports, Belichick is “believed to be biding his time” until next January, when head coaching vacancies will re-emerge.
While Belichick wasn’t able to snag a head coaching job this past offseason, he’s reportedly given confidants a short list of three teams he’d have interest in coaching.
The combined report from Don Van Natta Jr., Seth Wickersham, and Jeremy Fowler indicates that Belichick has his eye on the Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants, and Philadelphia Eagles, in no particular order.
All three teams could be facing much different scenarios next offseason. Expectations are always high in Dallas where Jerry Jones is eager to win his next Super Bowl. While Mike McCarthy has done an admirable job, leading the Cowboys to a 42-25 record, he’s seemingly always on the hot seat for failing to deliver in the playoffs, where Dallas has gone 1-3 under his leadership.
The same goes for Philadelphia as Nick Sirianni seemingly lost the locker room late last season. If the Eagles can’t rebound in a big way, it’s hard to imagine Sirianni returning in 2025.
In New York, Brian Daboll has had one unexpectedly good season, followed by one of the ugliest performances in the NFL in 2023, finishing with the third-worst offense in the league. If Coach Daboll can’t put his fingerprint on the offense and improve their scoring efficiency, the Giants could make a quick change too.
For Belichick, returning to the Giants could be a storybook ending. He spent six seasons there as an assistant and another six as their defensive coordinator, where he got to coach ‘the best defensive player of all-time‘ in Lawrence Taylor, helping win two Super Bowls before he even became a head coach. Of course, the Giants don’t have LT anymore, but that doesn’t mean Belichick’s love for the team has dissipated.
Ultimately, any of the three teams would be a good fit for Belichick, but really, any NFL team would be wise to consider arguably the greatest head coach of all time.
