Bethesda Wants to Release Games At A Quicker Rate

Highlights

  • Bethesda aims to release more games at a faster rate.
  • Fans have had to wait incredible amounts of time for new Bethesda games.
  • Starfield DLC and potential Fallout spin-offs offer hope for more timely releases in the future.

Bethesda is now hoping to release new video games at a faster rate than it has in the past, especially with Fallout’s increased popularity. Bethesda is known for its massive RPG franchises like Fallout, The Elder Scrolls, and last year’s mega-hit Starfield. However, these titles can take an incredibly long time to develop, with Starfield suffering from several delays and being in production for nearly eight years before finally hitting stores in September.

So far, the only new game Bethesda has confirmed for the future is the long-awaited The Elder Scrolls 6, which was announced back in 2018 and is said to just now be in the early development stages. Making this wait especially glaring is the fact that the previous mainline entry in the series, The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim, was released way back in 2011 – no less than two console generations ago. While Fallout fans have gotten more content to enjoy in that same time thanks to Fallout 4 and Fallout 76, the success of the recent Fallout TV series has sparked an increased interest in the post-apocalyptic franchise.

A Fallout 4 player clips a moment in which a typically inanimate pre-war car swings wildly at them as they snipe some nearby Synths.

This interest is currently being met with Fallout 4’s recent next-gen update, which has been met with controversy for various reasons. Meanwhile, Bethesda executive producer Todd Howard sat down with the Kinda Funny Games podcast, where he discussed the long time it usually takes his studio to make new projects. He notes that Bethesda’s main focus is to ensure that its releases are “of the highest quality,” but admits that he and the rest of the studio wish to find ways to increase its output.

Some of this output could include the first Starfield DLC expansion, which Todd Howard revealed is coming out this fall. As for Fallout, Howard hinted at the possibility of more spin-offs like 2010’s Fallout: New Vegas, especially in light of the Amazon Prime Video series’ successful premiere earlier this month. However, Howard acknowledges that these projects take time, as much as he would like to “snap his fingers and have them all out already.”

That being said, Todd Howard and the rest of Bethesda seem to be looking into getting more games released in a more timely manner, which might be welcome news for gamers who are still waiting for any more information about The Elder Scrolls 6 or Fallout 5 – the latter of which was only confirmed by Howard two years ago. The wait for Bethesda’s next RPG epic could be shorter than usual, but in the meantime, fans have this fall’s Starfield expansion to look forward to.
