Best Legends For Beginners, Ranked

Apex Legends is one of the most played battle royale games out right now. This can be attributed to the game’s excellent movement mechanics and healthy roster of heroes or legends that can adapt to different playstyles. To put it in numbers, the game has a total of 26 legends, each with a set of perks that make up their Tactical, Ultimate, and Passive abilities. The legends are further subdivided into different classes, such as skirmishers, medics, and more.

Apex Legends Dev Says Broken Moon is Like a ‘Brand-New Map’ in Season 21

Game Rant speaks with Apex Legends lead level designer Steve Young about how the team went about improving the Broken Moon Map.

Needless to say, gamers unfamiliar with the shooter may find the abundance of choices a tad overwhelming. Those looking to jump on the Apex bandwagon before Season 21 hits should check out the best starter legends in the game outlined below.

Perk System Explained

First and foremost, players should familiarize themselves with the game’s perk system. Every legend starts out with a basic white shield. As players perform various tasks in the game, such as dealing damage, scanning ring consoles, and opening specialized bins, they gather Evo points required to level up their shields.

A white shield levels up to a blue shield, then a purple shield, and finally, a red shield. When players level up their armor to blue and purple, respectively, they are allowed to choose from two perks. This, in turn, modifies a legend’s Tactical or Ultimate abilities. With the basics out of the way, let’s look at the best Legends for folks starting out with Apex Legends.

10 Catalyst

Class: Controller (Legend Can Scan Ring Consoles To Identify The Next Zone)

Catalyst from Apex Legends

  • Catalyst’s kit is getting a host of improvements in the upcoming season, including the ability to reconstruct broken doors
  • Catalyst’s Tactical and Ultimate abilities allow players to hold their ground and rotate freely

Catalyst’s kit has seen a lot of improvements in Season 21. To that end, the legend is now a viable character for defensive-minded gamers, as well as those looking to pick fights willy-nilly. Catalyst’s Tactical ability deploys spikes that damage enemies, while the Ultimate ability creates a wall, blocking vision and providing cover for rotation. Catalyst’s Passive, on the other hand, allows players to barricade broken doors.

The new perks will allow Catalyst to reconstruct doors completely and further reinforce them with a gooey material called Ferrofluid. As such, players will be able to barricade doors, deploy spikes, and hunker down, or rotate freely and flank enemies with their Ultimate ability.

9 Revenant

Class: Skirmisher (Legend Can Reveal Items In Care Package Drops)

Revenant from Apex Legends

  • Revenant’s Passive gives him unmatched movement abilities
  • Revenant’s Ultimate can aid new players as it grants them an extra, regenerative shield

Catalyst’s abilities require some learning curve. Revenant, on the other hand, is a pounce-and-pound legend that thrives in fights. Revenant’s Passive allows players to scale tall surfaces, like buildings. It also gives him a speed boost when he’s crouching. His Tactical, aptly dubbed Shadow Pounce, allows players to leap great distances.

The Ultimate ability lends Revenant a regenerative shield made up of shadows. The perk system can then be used to reduce the cooldown for the Ultimate ability AND grant players 50HP whenever they knock an enemy. Suffice it to say, Revenant’s kit is ideal for novice gamers as it gives them a much-needed edge when taking fights. Additionally, if things go south, players can rely on the character’s Tactical ability and jump away from the heat of the battle.

8 Fuse

Class: Assault (Legends Can Carry More Ammo And Open Assault Bins)

Fuse - Apex Legends Best Legends Beginners

  • Fuse can grief enemy players by bombarding them with grenades
  • Fuse’s Ultimate can also be used to escape sketchy situations or restrict an enemy’s advance

Fuse is an out-and-out assault legend that can be used to turn the tide of the battle. His Tactical allows him to fire knuckle clusters – tiny grenades that explode into smaller submunitions and deal damage. Knuckle clusters have incredible range and can be stuck onto enemy players, too. Thanks to his Passive ability, Fuse can stack grenades in his inventory and launch them much further, making him a great legend with which to bombard enemy players.

His Ultimate ability can come in handy in end-game situations, too. To that end, Fuse can create a ring of fire that traps enemy players. Additionally, the opposition party trapped in the ring will be highlighted to the player’s team, too. Running through the ring of fire deals a lot of damage and slows enemy players, allowing trigger-happy individuals to cherry-pick their targets easily. All said and done, gamers looking to wreak havoc with a truckload of grenades will find Fuse right up their alley.

7 Lifeline

Class: Medic (Can Craft A Teammate’s Banner To Respawn Them And Open Blue Medic Bins)

Lifeline - Apex Legends Best Legends Beginners

  • Lifeline is a full-fledged medic and a great support Legend
  • Her Ultimate can be used to replenish heals, which will come in clutch towards the end of the game

Players who thrive in support roles will find Lifeline to their liking. Lifeline’s Tactical ability is the Drone of Compassion or D.O.C, which serves as a healing drone that can be used by Lifeline and her teammates during fights. Her Ultimate ability takes the form of a defensive care package that replenishes a team’s resources, including shield batteries, phoenix kits, and other essential items.

The most important facet of Lifeline’s kit is her Passive ability. To that end, Lifeline can deploy D.O.C. to revive teammates in her stead. It should be noted that she’s the only legend in the game who can participate in a fight while reviving someone. As such, players can fend off enemies as D.O.C. revives their teammates.

What’s more, thanks to the new Tactical Cooldown++ perk, Lifeline can reduce her Tactical’s cooldown to match the drone’s deployment time. As soon as the drone goes away, Lifeline can deploy it again. Needless to say, players just starting out will need a dependable legend to heal them quickly, making Lifeline a good option to consider.

6 Conduit

Class: Support (Can Craft A Teammate’s Banner To Respawn Them And Open Blue Medic Bins)

Conduit from Apex Legends

  • Conduit’s Tactical can prolong a gunfight and give her teammates an edge
  • Her kit is quite versatile, allowing players to play as a support Legend or as an aggressor

Conduit has quickly climbed the popularity charts and is among the most-picked Legends in the game despite being introduced in Season 19. This can be attributed to her Tactical, which can replenish her and a teammate’s shields. Additionally, her Ultimate fires a barrage of jammers that cover a sizeable area. These jammers also damage and slow enemy players down. Suffice it to say, it’s not advisable to push through a Conduit’s Ult.

Apex Legends: New Season 21 Character’s Abilities Could Be a Game-Changer

Apex Legends Season 21 is bringing new Skirmisher Legend Alter into the fold, and her lore and abilities could be real game-changers.

Players who are just starting out may need to spend some time exploring different POIs and equipping their guns with the right attachments. When playing alone, they might find it difficult to keep up with their team members who move quickly. Thankfully, Conduit’s Passive ability increases her movement speed when her teammates are out of her Tactical’s range. As such, players can catch up with their teammates swiftly.

5 Wraith

Class: Skirmisher (Legend Can Reveal Items In Care Package Drops)

Wraith - Apex Legends Best Legends Beginners

  • Wraith’s Tactical ability allows her to jump in and out of fights
  • Wraith’s Passive can nudge newcomers to take cover by giving helpful audio cues

Wraith is one of the most iconic Legends, introduced to the game nearly five years ago. Despite countless meta changes and the introduction of new Legends, she has retained her spot at the top. Wraith is a stellar Legend for newcomers, too, primarily because of her Tactical’s forgiving nature.

This allows players to phase into a different dimension if the gunfights get too overwhelming. Players can also take the role of an entry-fragger or an aggressor by using her Ultimate, which creates a two-way portal to transport her and her teammates to the thick of the action.

Her Passive can also help newcomers ascertain if they are in an enemy’s line of sight. If they are, Wraith will say something along the lines of ‘you’re being aimed at’, a helpful audio cue to take cover.

4 Caustic

Class: Controller (Legend Can Scan Ring Consoles To Identify The Next Zone)

Caustic from Apex Legends

  • Caustic can gatekeep enemies by planting gas barrels on entry points and doorways
  • Caustic’s Ult is extremely powerful and gels superbly with the Residual Toxins and Particle Diffuser perks

Caustic has a lot going for him, too. Before we talk about his Tactical ability, it should be noted that Caustic is a Fortified legend. While he has a sizeable hitbox, he also takes around 15 percent less damage. Additionally, he is immune to the ‘slow down’ effect when being shot. As for his kit, Caustic can be played by defensive and offensive-minded players. His Tactical ability allows him to throw barrels of gas, which trigger when shot or if an enemy team is nearby. These can be used to limit an enemy team’s push or to block doors and other entry points.

His Ultimate, on the other hand, allows him to encapsulate a sizeable area in his deadly Nox gas. The gas slows enemy players and eats into their health. Needless to say, enemies fighting in Caustic’s ult stand little to no chance against the mad scientist and his allies. We should also add that Caustic’s perks allow him to see enemies in his Nox gas for longer and increase the area of effect of his Ultimate by 50 percent!

3 Loba

Class: Support (Can Craft A Teammate’s Banner To Respawn Them And Open Blue Medic Bins)

Loba - Apex Legends Best Legends Beginners

  • Loba can equip the team with kitted-out guns, heals, and a truckload of ammo
  • Loba starts the game with her Ultimate ability charged at 50 percent

First-timers playing Apex Legends will be spoilt for choices. That’s where Loba comes into the mix, who can use her Ultimate ability to open a Black Market, which aggregates all the loot in a given area. Players can then pick two items from the Black Market (three with the right perk), as well as all the ammo they can carry.

Her Tactical ability comes in handy when a gunfight is going south. Loba can then throw her bracelet to escape the fight quickly. She will land wherever the bracelet drops. Players can also improve her Tactical’s range with the Legend Perks.

2 Bloodhound

Class: Recon (Can Scan Survey Beacons To Pinpoint Enemy Location)

Bloodhound - Apex Legends Best Legends Beginners

  • Bloodhound Passive can track enemy activity and footsteps, giving players visual cues of their whereabouts
  • The perk system allows players to extend his Ultimate’s duration or grant Bloodhound some HP with every knock

Bloodhound is one of the strongest recon legends in the game. This can be attributed, at least in part, to Apex’s sub-par audio cues. Consequently, players can use Bloodhound’s Tactical ability to scan for nearby enemies and traps. Players can also interact with White Ravens on the map when playing as Bloodhound, which will then fly toward the nearest enemy team.

Players going for the early kill in Apex Legends should try out these weapons.

Bloodhound’s Ultimate ability is quite strong, too. When activated, the ability grants players a massive speed boost. Additionally, enemies are highlighted in red (color may vary depending on the player’s in-game settings), which is advantageous when fighting in a Bangalore’s smoke or near Caustic’s gas.

1 Bangalore

Class: Assault (Legends Can Carry More Ammo And Open Assault Bins)

Bangalore - Apex Legends Best Legends Beginners

  • With Digital Threat optics out of rotation, Bangalore’s Tactical ability will be unmatched in Season 21
  • Bangalore’s Passive can help players get out of a fix by granting a temporary speed boost

When playing as Bangalore, players will get helpful insights when pinging different items. Picking up the Havoc energy rifle? Ping it, and Bangalore will talk about its slow ramp-up time. Getting a Flatline instead? Bangalore will warn players about its recoil.

Her Passive is also quite useful, increasing the Legend’s movement speed when getting shot by enemies. Her Tactical, on the other hand, fires a smoke grenade, masking her presence and giving her teammates ample cover to rotate or heal. Her Ultimate can be a useful tool to slow down fights, as it drops a massive Artillery Strike that detonates after a short delay. Pool everything together, and Bangalore makes a strong case for the ultimate starter legend.
