The Mastiffs opened the scoring with their first shot on target from Yusuf Yazici, who started following the absence of Edon Zegrova, injured in the ankle (15th, 1-0). Lille still had several good balls poorly exploited by Benjamin André (30th) and Tiago Santos (41st). Despite their 63% possession of the ball, Aston Villa did not lead much and did not shoot once on goal in the first half.
