Ariana Grande, Doja Cat, Mindy Kaling & more

The 2024 Met Gala was a visual feast for fashion lovers. The annual fundraising event for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute was a meeting of the minds for the fashion world’s elite and their celebrity muses as they offered their take on this year’s dress code of “The Garden of Time” to Vogue’s editor-in-chief, Anna Wintour.

Wintour enlisted the help of Zendaya, Jennifer Lopez, Bad Bunny and Chris Hemsworth to act as the event’s co-chairs, along with honourary chairs, Jonathan Anderson, the creative director for Loewe, and TikTok CEO Shou Chew.

The dress code for the red carpet of the gala is somewhat different than this year’s Met exhibit itself. The “Sleeping Beauties: Rewakening Fashion” exhibit features pieces of clothing too delicate to be worn again and therefore dubbed “sleeping beauties” along with modern offerings that utilize nature as inspiration.

Using the exhibit as a jumping-off point, guests were referred to J.G. Ballard’s 1962 short story “The Garden of Time” for guidance. According to Vogue, “melancholic florals” or floral-themed pieces along with interpretations of the short story’s characters are encouraged as are looks inspired by the exhibit itself, which is divided into subsections of land, sea and sky.

So, how did guests fare in interpreting the theme?

We’ve gathered some of the best and worst looks from this year’s Met Gala and want Yahoo Canada readers to have their say. Check back in with us tomorrow to see who was declared the best and worst dressed star from the 2024 Met Gala!

Grande put her Glinda-inspired pink wardrobe aside for this year’s Met Gala in favour of a dreamy custom look by Loewe creative director and Met Gala honourary chair, Jonathan Anderson. The 30-year-old singer wore an ethereal look that featured a bustier made from mother of pearl and a silk chiffon skirt in muted tones to mimic the mineral’s iridescent colours.

Ora’s nude illusion look by Marni missed the mark for our team of editors. The bodysuit was covered with strands of beads that Ora told Vogue were from the first and second century B.C., and although we love an artifact, we wish there were more beads to create some short of silhouette for this daring look.

Kaling wowed in an architectural look by Indian designer Gaurav Gupta that featured swirls of sand-coloured fabric that culminated in a show-stopping halo. Kaling told Vogue’s that the look was called “The Melting Flower of Time” and was meant to look like a flower that was once in full bloom was melting away.

The “Anyone But You” star looked like anyone but herself on the Met Gala red carpet. Sweeney traded in her blonde hair for a black bob (presumably a wig) that pulled focus from her on-theme floral Miu Miu gown. The severe hair paired with the black gloves were too much for the star, who tried something new but perhaps strayed too far from a fashion formula that works.

Kidman’s pulled from the event’s “sleeping beauties” theme with her dramatic monochrome ballgown that was a recreation of a Balenciaga ballgown from 1951. The Oscar-winner told Vogue she fell in love with “the idea of kissing a Balenciaga couture gown awake” with her exquisite homage that took more than 800 hours to make and featured 3000 hand-cut silk organza feathers.

Although she was spotted leaving her hotel in a towel, Doja Cat arrived to the Met Gala in a “wet” T-shirt ensemble and bold, chrome tears. The “Say So” singer’s look stood out amongst the crowd of guests who attempted to adhere to Wintour’s dress code, but unfortunately fell flat in our books.

Fanning looked as though she had been frozen in time in a custom Balmain. The 26-year-old’s off the shoulder ensemble looked as though she was shrouded in ice and featured glass-like birds tugging at the fabric of her gown. The look was an edgy take on the classic imagery of Cinderella image of being dressed by birds in a look that fashion lovers won’t forget.

Demi Moore’s Harris Reed gown was created from vintage wallpaper that Reed told Vogue featured more than 11,000 hours of embroidery and hand-painted petals. The daring look might be too avant-garde for our tastes, however the look was saved by Moore’s Cartier “Chloris” necklace that features more than 7.87 karats of emeralds.

González’ floral Del Core gown was a welcomed breath of fresh air on the Met Gala red carpet. While some guests went over-the-top with their interpretation of the dress code, the actress’s gown featured subtle pink chiffon petals that didn’t veer into costume territory. González wore her hair in a fairy tale-inspired ponytail with turquoise and diamond Cartier necklace.

Karol G took a page from the Middle Earth playbook for her Met Gala debut. The Colombian singer’s take on “The Garden of Time” took a sharp turn into cosplay with her fairy-inspired ears and ice blonde wig that was perhaps too literal of an interpretation of Wintour’s vision.
