Strong earthquake hits Japan, tsunami warning issued

The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami warning for Izu and Ogasawara islands, south of Tokyo, on Tuesday after a 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck the area, with a tsunami of 50 centimeters recorded at one location.

The quake struck at 08:14 a.m. and was centered in waters near Torishima Island in the Izu Islands chain in the Pacific Ocean, at a depth of about 10 kilometers below the surface, according to Kyodo News Agency.

A tsunami measuring 50 centimeters (20 inches) high was detected at 08:58 a.m. on Hachijo Island, about 180 kilometers (112 miles) north of the quake’s epicenter, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. A tsunami measuring 10 centimeters (3 inches) high was also detected on Miyake Island.

No injuries have been reported so far, according to Tokyo police.

The agency expected tsunami waves of up to one meter in height, and called on the public to stay away from coastal areas.
