GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) — Yvonne Johnson, a local politician with a long tenure in Greensboro has passed away, according to former Mayor Robbie Perkins.
Johnson died on Wednesday morning.
Johnson was currently serving as an at-large member of the Greensboro City Council with her term expiring in 2025. She had been in that seat since 2011. Before that, she served as the mayor of Greensboro from 2007-2009. Prior to that, she was a council member from 1993-2007.
She graduated from Bennett College and received a master’s degree from North Carolina A&T State University.
In May, the Rhino Times reported that Johnson stepped down from leadership of her nonprofit, One Step Further.
Johnson ran One Step Further for 40 years. It is described on its website as “a private, non-profit agency that helps adults, youth, parents and families take positive steps in their lives during times of personal crisis and conflict.”
Johnson was 82.
