PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – Mill Ends Park, the world’s smallest park, had its tiny tree dressed up for the holidays. The tree is one of many that can be seen around Portland, but is likely the smallest.
The 452-square-inch park is ready for the holiday season after holiday birds, ornaments, and a star topper were put in place this week. The original decor included holiday lights seen first on Travel Portland’s Instagram page.
The tiny urban park is located in the median strip of SW Naito Parkway in downtown Portland, Oregon. The park is the smallest in the world, according to the Guinness Book of Records, which first recognized it in 1971.
Mill Ends Park was created by The Oregon Journal’s Dick Fagan, who was tired of looking at a hole in the median across from his office window that had been intended for a light pole that never arrived. Fagan planted flowers in the hole, and the park was dedicated on St. Patrick’s Day in 1948.
The park was temporarily moved in 2006 to make room for road construction before returning to the location. It was then moved west – a whopping 6 inches – in 2021 to make room for sidewalk improvements, according to the city.
