Women’s a capella chorus performs live in Paphos

Women’s a capella chorus performs live in Paphos

A unique musical evening is coming to Paphos this weekend as the Cyprus-based choir Spellbound performs live on the Markideio Theatre stage. The women forming the chorus will not be taking the stage alone this Saturday, however, as they have invited the Main Street Quartet of Disneyland Paris to join them for a night of enchanting, whimsical music. The show also happens on World Singing Day, celebrating the day as it deserves to be celebrated.

The evening will commence at 7.30pm with the Paphos-based women’s choir charming audiences with a rich repertoire of popular songs from today and recent decades, as well as timeless classics audiences of all ages, can enjoy. Included in the programme are songs such as How Deep Is Your Love (The Bee Gees), Mamma Mia (Abba), Somebody To Love (Queen), Valerie (Amy Winehouse) and When I Fall In Love (Nat King Cole) amongst others.

Spellbound was formed in January 2023 and has grown from just a dozen choir members to 37 singers. “With members of 12 different nationalities, many of whom have never performed in this style before, we are truly a chorus for all women,” they say.

The choir sings a capella, meaning without musical accompaniment, and primarily in the barbershop harmony style. Big plans are in their future as next March, Spellbound will travel to The Netherlands to represent Cyprus in an international chorus contest. This weekend, they are giving Paphos audiences a little taste.

Joining them on the evening this Saturday is the iconic Main Street Quartet, which first entered the spotlight in 1992 singing live on TV to a worldwide audience of over 100 million homes for the grand opening of Disneyland Paris. Since then, they have entertained thousands of visitors every day, appeared on TV and radio several times and though they have performed around Europe and the US, this will be their first time in Cyprus.

Their repertoire for Saturday will include tunes everybody knows and loves – My Girl (The Temptations), Zip A Dee Doo Dah (Disney), I’m Sittin’ On Top Of The World (Bobby Darin), Walking My Baby Back Home (Nat King Cole) and more pieces sure to captivate audiences.
