Wife of veteran, father killed in Asheboro robbery speaks as police continue to seek suspects

ASHEBORO, N.C. (WGHP) — Police are continuing their search for the suspects responsible for the fatal shooting of a Navy veteran during an armed robbery earlier this month.

On Saturday night, the Asheboro Police Department announced they had found the getaway car used in the robbery, a 2013 gray Toyota Avalon, abandoned in Durham. Surveillance footage from the scene shows two suspects wearing all black, but they remain on the run.

David Matthew Davis, 39, a U.S. Navy veteran and father of three children with special needs, was killed during the robbery at 64 Skillz, a gaming business in Asheboro, on Veterans Day. His wife, Megan Davis, is now left to cope with the unimaginable pain of losing her husband.

“I didn’t just lose a husband. We lost a daddy to three children with special needs. I lost a caregiver because of my own chronic illnesses. A mother lost a son. A father lost his son. Siblings lost a brother. The community lost a friend,” Megan Davis said.

David and Megan, married for 17 years, were raising three children together. As the family’s sole provider, David worked the night shift to ensure they had everything they needed. Megan now faces the challenge of providing for their family while dealing with the loss.

“Not only are we navigating grief and the loss of David, as a mother I am also worried about how I’m going to provide for my children, how I’m going to keep the roof over our heads, the lights on,” Megan said. “The most basic of needs met. Let alone Christmas this time of year.”

The suspects, who have not yet been found, are seen in the surveillance footage wearing dark clothing.

“Not knowing where they are, I have a fear as to where they find my location. I have a fear they are going to go to another store and upend someone else’s life this way,” Megan said.

Asheboro Police Crime Stoppers is offering a $2,500 reward for information that leads to an arrest. 64 Skillz, where David Davis worked, is also offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the suspects capture.

A GoFundMe link has been set up to support the Davis family.
