Who is Hashem Safi al-Din, the most prominent candidate to succeed Hassan Nasrallah?

Hashem Safi al-Din topped the names nominated to lead the Hezbollah organization, following the Israeli army’s announcement today of the killing of Hassan Nasrallah.

Safi al-Din is related to the murdered Secretary-General of Hezbollah, as he is his cousin, has a strong resemblance to Nasrallah, even in the way he speaks, and is two years older than him.

A prominent former Hezbollah leader revealed earlier to Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper that Safi al-Din was chosen about two years after Nasrallah assumed the position of Secretary-General in 1992, succeeding Abbas al-Musawi, who was assassinated by Israel.

The preparation of the nominated caliph began 30 years ago, when he traveled from Qom to Beirut, to then assume the presidency of the Executive Council, which is considered the party’s government, under the supervision of the party’s former security commander, Imad Mughniyeh.

During that period, Safi al-Din Nasrallah remained close to him, and was responsible for all the party’s sensitive daily files, including the management of funds and investments, with the exception of the strategic files, which remained Hassan Nasrallah’s jurisdiction.

It is worth noting that Washington had included Hashem Safi al-Din, who is considered a senior Hezbollah official, on the terrorist list in 2017.

As for his relationship with Qassem Soleimani, the former commander of the Quds Force in the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, who was assassinated by America in Baghdad, it was very distinguished, as his son Reza married Zainab Soleimani in 2020.
