The intense air attack by Israel killed more than 3,800 people, many of them civilians, according to Lebanese officials.
The most prominent of these items are as follows:
- The ceasefire will go into effect at 4 a.m. Wednesday local time (2 GMT).
- The Israeli army gradually withdraws from Lebanon within 60 days.
- Hezbollah withdraws from southern Lebanon to areas north of the Litani River.
- The Lebanese areas south of the Litani River will be evacuated of Hezbollah’s heavy weapons.
- The Lebanese Army and Lebanese Security Forces take over positions currently controlled by the Israeli Army and Hezbollah.
- Both Lebanon and Israel reserve the right to self-defense in accordance with international law.
- The US Army, in cooperation with the French Army, provides technical support to the Lebanese Army.
- A military committee in which several countries participate provides additional support to the Lebanese army in terms of equipment, training and financing.
- The United States and France are joining the tripartite mechanism established after the 2006 war to oversee the implementation of the ceasefire, which currently includes the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), Israel, and Lebanon.
- The United States will chair this five-party mechanism, whose mission will be to maintain “direct” communication between the various parties and allow “every time a violation is detected, especially a serious violation,” to be “addressed immediately” to avoid any escalation.
