Lebanese caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati said in statements broadcast on television on Sunday, “We have no choice but a diplomatic solution,” in response to a question about diplomatic efforts to stop Israel’s escalation of the intensity of the fighting against the Lebanese Hezbollah group.
For his part, Lebanese Information Minister Ziad Makari said after a cabinet session on Sunday that diplomatic efforts to reach a ceasefire with Israel are “continuing.”
Makari said during a press conference after the session, “Why don’t we want a ceasefire?! Sure (we want that)… Everyone knows that the Prime Minister of (Israel) Benjamin Netanyahu went (to New York) on the basis of a ceasefire and the decision came to assassinate Sayyed Hassan Nasr.” God is in the United Nations building, so it is known who wants a ceasefire and who does not want a ceasefire.”
Yesterday, Saturday, it was confirmed that Nasrallah, Secretary-General of the Lebanese Hezbollah group, was killed in a major raid on the southern suburb of Beirut on Friday, escalating tensions between Lebanon and Israel after months of cross-border hostilities.
Makari added, “Certainly, diplomatic efforts are continuing. The Prime Minister (Najib Mikati) never neglects this issue. Rather, the situation is not as easy as you are thinking.”
