Ustel wins party leadership elections in north

Turkish Cypriot ‘prime minister’ Unal Ustel was voted at the head of the UBP party in the north, it emerged on Sunday.

The announcement on Sunday said Ustel won with 65.8 per cent of the vote by 21,000 UBP party members.

UBP is currently the party in power in the north and the party from which Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar hails from.

Ustel said this is the result of a democratic process that lasted 2.5 months and noted that he had toured “every town and village”.

He added that they kept the promises they made when they came to power and implemented the unfinished projects. “Yesterday was left in history. We are looking at tomorrow. From tomorrow we continue on our way. Many problems await us. As a government, we will continue to serve our people with stability until 2027.”

Tatar congratulated Ustel for his win, while members of the party’s central committee will be announced on Monday.
