The United Nations General Assembly adopted the “Charter for the Future,” which the United Nations considers to be the main rules for international action plans to achieve reform to put the world on a better path that benefits everyone everywhere, and also to protect the needs and interests of present and future generations for a better future.
The Assembly adopted the Charter at the opening of the Future Summit at its headquarters in New York, in the presence of dozens of heads of state and government, foreign ministers and senior officials from 193 countries, and representatives of civil society, the private sector and youth from various countries around the world.
In his opening speech at the summit, General Assembly President Philomon Yang stressed the ability of the international community to make important choices for the future, at a time when the world stands at a crossroads of transformation and in the face of unprecedented challenges that require urgent collective action to contain the challenges of conflict, climate change, the digital divide and others.
He noted that the summit provides a path for the future not only to address immediate crises, but also to lay the foundations for a sustainable, just and peaceful global order for all peoples and nations.
“Let us rise together to this moment with courage and resolve as we accelerate our journey toward a brighter future for everyone, everywhere,” Yang said.
For his part, UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned that the world is facing turbulent times of transformation, stressing the need to take the first decisive steps to update and reform the frameworks of international cooperation to make it more interconnected, just and inclusive. He considered the agreements adopted at the Future Summit, including the Charter for the Future, the Global Digital Charter, and the Declaration on Future Generations, as necessary to provide new possibilities and opportunities.
He noted that these agreements promise to achieve significant progress in the field of reforms aimed at making the Security Council more capable of reflecting the shape of the world today, including addressing the historical under-representation of Africa, the Asia-Pacific region and Latin America. They also lay the foundation for building a more resilient peace and for conducting a fundamental review of peace operations to make them appropriate to the circumstances they face.
He stressed that it represents the first agreed multilateral support for nuclear disarmament in more than a decade, and commits to taking steps to prevent an arms race in outer space and regulate the use of lethal autonomous weapons. It includes measures to develop an immediate and coordinated response to complex global shocks.
On the level of sustainable development, he pointed out that these agreements represent great progress towards pioneering reforms of the international financial architecture and will make the institutions more representative of today’s world, stressing the need to give priority to dialogue and negotiation, ending wars, reforming the composition and working methods of the Security Council, accelerating reforms of the global financial system, and placing the interests of humanity at the core of new technology.
