A UK spy plane has been caught on camera departing from the Akrotiri British bases in Cyprus, allegedly departing for Gaza, it emerged on Friday.
The images published by Declassified UK come amid calls for another protest against the use of the bases to aid Israel’s war against Gaza and Lebanon.
Declassified UK reported a day earlier it had hired cameraman Aleksandar Ljubojevic who managed to capture an image of the ZZ507 (Shadow R1).
According to the Royal Airforce, Shadow R1 “contributes to the comprehensive intelligence gathering of the RAFs ISTAR Force” using a combination of sensors.
The news outlet said that so far, no pictures have emerged of the Shadow fleet operating from their base at Akrotiri in Cyprus.
The use of the British bases has stirred controversy across the island, sparking numerous protests. This week, opposition Akel and Cyprus’ peace council called for a protest on November 24 outside a US research centre in Larnaca ‘Cyclops’.
Set to begin at 10.30am, organisers said the aim is to call for an end to Cyprus’ involvement in these operations, and an end to Israel’s “military attacks against Palestine, Lebanon, and the broader region.”
