Sulaiman Al-Jibreen, Executive Secretary of the Middle East and North Africa Financial Action Task Force (MENAFATF), affirmed the UAE’s firm commitment to combating money laundering and terrorist financing, which will enhance its regional and global leadership.

Al-Jabreen said, in a dialogue on the sidelines of the annual meeting and technical assistance and training forum of the Asia-Pacific Group against Money Laundering, which is being held in the capital, Abu Dhabi, for the first time in the region, that the UAE has strengthened its efforts over the past years to combat money laundering and terrorist financing, in addition to strengthening its efforts and cooperation with all relevant technical bodies at the regional and international levels.

He pointed out that the UAE was recently removed from the grey list, as a culmination of its efforts and achievements in the field of combating money laundering and terrorist financing, which confirms its firm commitment to combating financial crimes worldwide and enhancing international cooperation.

Al-Jabreen pointed out that the UAE did not stop at its exit from the grey list, but rather continued its efforts and commitments, which is confirmed by its hosting of this important international event, which confirms that the UAE is well aware that the risks of money laundering and financing terrorism require international cooperation with various countries and organizations around the world in order to combat these crimes.

He explained that the annual meeting of the Asia-Pacific Group against Money Laundering is an important meeting, especially since it is being held for the first time in the Middle East region to highlight the efforts of different countries in combating money laundering and terrorist financing issues, in addition to its role in highlighting the emerging patterns of these crimes.

The Executive Secretary of the Middle East and North Africa Financial Action Task Force (MENAFATF) stated that such international meetings contribute to enhancing international cooperation and exchanging expertise, in addition to discussing and exchanging ideas in order to find serious solutions to the challenges in the issues of money laundering and terrorist financing.

He pointed out that the event witnesses the presence of two important regional groups, namely the Asia-Pacific Group and the Middle East and North Africa Financial Action Task Force (MENAFATF), with the attendance of more than 60 countries, to discuss and affirm the commitment to combating financial crimes and cooperating effectively at multiple levels, whether bilaterally or through regional cooperation.

Al-Jabrin pointed out that the event also highlights the challenges and the mechanism for addressing them, by finding constructive solutions to combat these crimes and prevent their international transfer, especially since money laundering and terrorism financing crimes are not fixed in a specific country, but rather cross-border.

It is worth noting that this is the first time that the annual meeting of the Asia-Pacific Group against Money Laundering is held in the Middle East, confirming the role of the UAE and its commitment to strengthening international partnerships in combating financial crime.
