The United Arab Emirates and the United States of America today signed an agreement on cooperation and mutual administrative assistance in customs affairs to enhance economic, trade and customs cooperation and exchange customs expertise and information between the two countries. This came on the sidelines of the official visit of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the State, “may God protect him”, to the United States.

The agreement was signed on behalf of the UAE by His Excellency Ali Mohammed Al Shamsi, Chairman of the Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship, Customs and Ports Security, and on behalf of the US by Troy A. Miller, Acting Commissioner of Customs and Border Protection.

On this occasion, His Excellency Ali Mohammed Al Shamsi stressed that the agreement contributes to strengthening the economic partnership relations between the two friendly countries, increasing the rates of trade exchange between them, reducing customs violations and illegal trade, and pushing the technical customs partnership to broader horizons through cooperation and assistance in exchanging information and expertise, and raising the level of national competencies through training and exposure to the best practices in the customs field.

His Excellency added that the bilateral trade between the two countries is witnessing continuous growth based on the depth of the political and economic relations that unite them, which enhances development relations, within the framework of the keenness of the leaderships of the two countries to strengthen bilateral customs relations and expand the scope of trade between them, in addition to benefiting from the best practices to confront the challenges that prevent the smooth transfer of goods and commodities through joint supply lines.

His Excellency explained that the importance of signing the agreement on cooperation and mutual assistance in customs affairs with the United States of America lies in the important role of the UAE in the global trade map as a regional trade gateway and the importance of the United States of America as an important strategic, historical and economic partner for the UAE, in addition to the fact that the American economy comes at the forefront as the largest economy in the world.
