TV shows we love: Noragami

TV shows we love: Noragami

A good beginning for people who want to get into anime is Noragami, even though its release date of 2014 makes it quite old in anime terms. And the plot is not too complicated, an advantage for those venturing into anime. The power systems of the characters are based on Japanese traditions and legends, providing an insight into Japanese culture.

The animation is well made, with aesthetic looking dynamic characters, with  powers that anyone would wish to have. Both seasons’ intro songs are full of upbeat vibes motivating viewers to continue the series as do the upcoming shots of the show.

The anime has two seasons, the first with 12 episodes and two longer pieces (OVAs), the second with 13 and two. Based on an action/supernatural manga written by Adachitoka, the show can be found on Crunchyroll.

The storyline focuses on the life of schoolgirl Hiyori, whose life takes a complete turn when she tries to help a stranger. In saving him from getting hit by a bus, she gets hit herself. These events result in out-of-body experiences. As a result, her soul frequently leaves her body making her aware of two parallel worlds.

The first one, Near Shore, is home to regular people and creatures while the second, Far Shore, sees fantoms and human souls linger. Fortunately, for her Hiyori rescued the minor god Yato, who tries to help her return to her normal self. Having few  followers and no shrine, Yato struggles to get people to worship him.

Additionally, his previous shinki (a weapon gods use to complete tasks) abandoned him, leaving him no weapon to fight with. Seeking a new one he finds Sekki that transforms into a bare blade. Yato and Hiyori make a deal: he fixes Hyori’s body and she makes a wish to him for only 5 yen, after which Yato is determined to make a name for himself by accepting any wish for that price, including Hiyori’s. By making this deal the three characters get involved inside the spirit world, where they follow a series of adventurous events.

Unfortunately the show was not renewed for a third season but fans can continue the plot by reading the finished manga.
