Turkish Cypriot delegate meets Russian deputy permanent representative to UN

Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar’s special representative Gunes Onar met Russia’s deputy permanent representative to the United Nations Anna Evstigneeva on Tuesday, Tatar’s office said.

The meeting took place at the office of Russia’s permanent mission to the UN in New York, with Tatar’s office saying it touched on subjects including the Cyprus problem and regional developments.

Meanwhile, Tatar released a statement expressing his agreement with the speech Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had given at the UN General Assembly, saying Turkish Cypriots had been “honoured” by the speech.

“By giving the best response to those who wanted to prevent us from being represented, [Erdogan], as the voice and the breath of the Turkish Cypriot people, has once again contributed to our just cause by putting it on the world’s agenda in bold letters.”

He described the speech as “historic”, and said he conveyed his “deepest respects and gratitude” to Erdogan.

The north’s ‘foreign minister’ Tahsin Ertugruloglu was also in agreement, saying the speech “made the Turkish Cypriot people happy”.
