Tree distribution in Berks County

Thousands of native trees and shrubs were given out free of charge during an event Thursday in Robeson Township.

The distribution of more than 3,000 plants took place at Rock Hollow Woods Environmental Learning Center.

It was part of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s 19 Million Tree program. CBF has partnered with the Interfaith Power & Light organization to allow homeowners, houses of worship and nonprofit groups to receive native trees and shrubs for site restoration, stream buffers, wildlife and insect benefits and overall beautification.

Organizers said this was the fifth such distribution held in Berks County and that the volume of requested plants grows with each twice-a-year giveaway.

Recipients received plants, tree tubes, stakes and bird netting and had an opportunity to question Penn State Master Gardeners, Master Naturalists, Watershed Stewards and people from Rock Hollow who volunteered to sort, label and disseminate the trees.
