The UAE delegation continues its participation in the work of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly

The UAE delegation participated in several major high-level meetings on the second day of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, held important meetings at the bilateral and multilateral levels during an event hosted by His Highness in the presence of heads of states and governments, senior officials in international organizations, and participants in the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

During the meetings, prospects for cooperation were discussed, and the discussions also addressed a number of files on the agenda of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly, including unimpeded access to humanitarian aid, combating climate change, promoting global health and well-being, and preventing the outbreak of conflicts and resolving them peacefully.

At the meeting of the Supreme Committee for a Sustainable Ocean Economy, the UAE announced that it would be the first country in the Middle East and North Africa region to join the committee, which extended an invitation to the UAE as a result of its leadership efforts in the areas of climate action and biodiversity.

Her Excellency Razan Al Mubarak, President of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and UN climate lead at COP28, attended the meeting representing the UAE.

For his part, His Excellency Dr. Anwar Gargash, Diplomatic Advisor to His Highness the President, met with Tim Lenderking, the US Special Envoy to Yemen, and Geir Pedersen, the United Nations Special Envoy to Syria.

Her Excellency Reem Al Hashemi, Minister of State for International Cooperation, and His Excellency Sultan Al Shamsi, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Development and International Organizations, met with His Excellency Luis Gilberto Murillo, Colombian Minister of Foreign Affairs, to sign a memorandum of understanding related to the construction of a hospital in the La Guajira region in Colombia, with the aim of reducing rates of infection. For his part, His Excellency Sheikh Shakhbut bin Nahyan Al Nahyan, Minister of State, participated in the events: “United for Peace in Sudan” and “Africa’s Rapid Development: The Global Business Initiative in Africa (GABI)”, organized by the United Nations Global Compact. His Excellency also met with representatives from various research centers and the private sector.

For his part, His Excellency Ahmed Al Sayegh, Minister of State, and His Excellency Dr. Maha Barakat, Assistant Secretary of State for Health and Life Sciences, joined the leaders at the Global Alliance Summit to Counter Synthetic Drug Threats, which was hosted by His Excellency Joe Biden, President of the United States.

The UAE, as a key member within the Global Alliance, affirmed its commitment to supporting the alliance and international efforts to confront this crisis. It also announced a new initiative in cooperation with Canada to enhance efforts to improve public health and increase access to medicines that contribute to saving individuals’ lives. His Excellency also participated in a meeting of ministers. G20 Foreign Affairs.

For his part, His Excellency Khalifa Shaheen Al Marar, Minister of State, participated in a joint meeting between the United States and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. His Excellency also attended the joint meeting of the Gulf Cooperation Council countries with the Benelux countries, in addition to the joint meeting of the Gulf Cooperation Council countries with the Nordic countries. His Excellency attended the twentieth anniversary of the cooperation initiative between NATO and Istanbul.

Her Excellency Lana Nusseibeh, Assistant Secretary of State for Political Affairs and the Secretary of State’s Envoy, met with Mr. Martin Kimani, Executive Director of the Center for International Cooperation at New York University, His Excellency Kevin Rudd, Australian Ambassador to the United States, and Mr. David Miliband, President and CEO of the International Rescue Committee.

His Excellency Sultan Al Shamsi, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Development and International Organizations, participated in meetings with senior officials from the Group of 77 and China. His Excellency also met with Her Excellency Fariye Ozvasioglu, Executive Director of the World Humanitarian Forum.
His Excellency Omran Sharaf, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Science and Advanced Technology, delivered an opening speech at the “Digital Transformation for Sustainable Development” event. His Excellency also participated in the Paris Peace Forum event entitled “Protecting the Structure of the Digital Future: The Path to Dealing with Geoeconomic Risks and Security Threats in Cross-Border Infrastructure Development.”

Her Excellency Dr. Maha Barakat, Assistant Secretary of State for Health and Life Sciences, participated in a dialogue on “A Healthier Future through Fair Vaccination,” in addition to the Foreign Policy Forum on Health.

His Excellency Abdullah Al-Alaa, Assistant Minister of State for Energy and Sustainability Affairs, participated in a meeting to discuss trends in climate finance reform, which is an initiative aimed at setting clear and implementable goals to strengthen the global climate finance framework that was launched at the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28), which The UAE hosted it late last year in Expo City Dubai.

For his part, His Excellency Salem Saeed Al Jabri, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Security and Military Affairs, attended the ministerial meeting of the Group of Friends of Victims of Terrorism.

Sheikha Shamma bint Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, President and CEO of the UAE Independent Accelerators for Climate Change, met with a number of CEOs and directors of a number of international institutions and companies within the framework of enhancing cooperation.
