The organization indicated that children constitute 52 percent of the approximately 14 million Sudanese who have been displaced within the country or have crossed the border into neighboring countries since the outbreak of fighting in mid-April 2023, which makes Sudan It is now the largest country in the world in terms of the scale of the child displacement crisis.
A lost generation
The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights said in a recent report that the conflict in Sudan threatens the future of an entire generation, with 24 million children at risk of losing their rights to life, survival, protection, education, health and development.
A UNHCR committee concerned with children’s rights called for an immediate end to the grave violations committed against children and to stop recruiting them and throwing them into battlefields.
The committee noted that thousands of children have been killed since the outbreak of war. It revealed disturbing reports of children being raped, deprived of basic necessities, and other violations of international law, including violations of children’s economic and social rights.
The committee explained, “There has been a sharp increase in the number of children who have been killed, or who have become victims of sexual violence as a weapon of war (…) Children are exposed to a greater risk due to the spread of armed recruitment of children in many areas in Sudan.” According to the “Doctors Without Borders” organization, Hundreds of children die from preventable diseases because their health needs are not met.
