Dr. Mahmoud Mohieldin, the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations on Financing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, stressed that the success of the goals of the Future Summit, which will be organized by the United Nations at its headquarters in New York on September 22 and 23, depends largely on the commitment of governments to implement its recommendations and the agreements that will emerge from them.
Mohieldin said in statements at the United Nations headquarters in New York that the international organization will closely follow up on the implementation of the outcomes of the summit, which is being held on the sidelines of the high-level week of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly. He considered the summit to be a summit of solutions, initiatives and decisive opportunities to save what can be saved of the efficiency and effectiveness of the existing global system and its institutions concerned with peace and development. He described it as a real opportunity to reconsider the mechanisms of international action and activate initiatives related to sustainable development and global peace.
He stressed the need for deeper international and regional cooperation to achieve sustainable development, especially in the Arab region, which is facing major challenges, including conflicts and humanitarian crises, noting that the Future Summit will seek to find practical solutions to these challenges, through regional and international cooperation.
Dr. Mohieldin revealed that the Future Summit will discuss, among other things, the issue of reforming the global financial system in line with current challenges, noting that reforming international financial institutions such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund has become a necessity.
He pointed out that the summit will focus on discussing the affairs, issues and aspirations of youth, including their involvement in providing job opportunities, enhancing their involvement in decision-making processes, adopting innovative solutions for digital transformation, green development and other emerging issues, stressing in this regard the importance of the role of youth in the Arab region, especially since they currently constitute the largest proportion of the population.
