Tatar to meet Guterres on Saturday

Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar is to meet United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Saturday, according to Turkish Cypriot news agency Tak.

The meeting between the pair is set to take place at 11.30am in New York – 6.30pm Cyprus time, with Tatar in New York for meetings on the sidelines of the UN’s General Assembly.

President Nikos Christodoulides, who is also in New York for the general assembly, is due to meet Guterres at 10.40pm on Monday night.

Tatar had said at a press conference before leaving Cyprus on Saturday night that he would “explain to Guterres why we cannot say yes to a tripartite meeting” between himself, Guterres, and Christodoulides.

Christodoulides is set to speak to the general assembly on Wednesday, while Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is due to speak on Tuesday morning, and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will give his speech on Friday.

Tatar will not speak at the general assembly but will hold other meetings in New York. Those meetings began on Monday with a banquet organised by the Turkish-American national steering committee and a meeting with Erdogan at the Rockefeller Plaza.
