Analysts and observers accused the army leadership of overlooking the re-arrest of these leaders despite their public movements, at a time when politicians from other organizations rejecting the ongoing war between the army and the Rapid Support Forces since mid-April are being pursued and arrested.
During the past two weeks, two meetings were held between two competing factions within the party, one of which was led by Omar Al-BashirIt resulted in the appointment of his assistant Ahmed Haroun as head of the party, while the second faction led by Nafi Ali Nafi, a former assistant to Bashir, also rejected the outcomes of the meeting and sought to install Ibrahim Mahmoud.
Mysterious exit
In fact, most of the leaders of the two factions participating in the meetings were released from prisons following the outbreak of fighting in Khartoum In mid-April 2023, amid varying accounts of how they were taken out.
When the fighting broke out, Al-Bashir was in a military hospital in Omdurman, northwest of Khartoum, with two of his aides, after they were transferred from Kober Prison, east of Khartoum, while Haroun and about 14 other leaders of the organization were detained in the prison.
After the overthrow of their 30-year rule, in April 2019, Al-Bashir, Haroun, and a number of members were arrested. Brotherhood organization On charges punishable by death, including participating in the 1989 coup, Al-Bashir and Haroun also face charges before the International Criminal Court of committing crimes against humanity during the Darfur war that broke out in 2003 and lasted for about 17 years and witnessed acts of killing, rape, arson, displacement and asylum that affected more than two million people.
According to circulating accounts, Al-Bashir and a number of his aides were transferred from the hospital to an unknown location.
For detainees inside Cooper prisonOne story indicates that an armed force affiliated with the organization stormed the prison and took them out. It stormed another prison and took out 28 officers in the security service who were awaiting execution after being convicted before the events of October 25, 2021, on charges of killing a teacher in a hideous manner during the period of the popular movement that began in December. 2018.
But last April, the Director General of Prisons, V SudanIt was the Kober prison administration that allowed the organization’s members to be removed from the prison days after the outbreak of fighting. He explained that the process of removing them took place after they signed pledges based on orders from the Deputy Chief Justice.
Freedom to move
Despite the serious charges against them, some of those who participated in the meetings move freely in areas controlled by the army.
Last January, one of the organization’s leaders revealed, in a documented video clip, a meeting that Ahmed Haroun conducted with them in the Al-Jazeera region in the center of the country, months after the outbreak of the war, with the aim of developing plans for popular mobilization.
In this context, says Al-Moez Hadra, a member of the indictment in the 1989 coup case in which he was being tried Al-Bashir And a number of his aides participating in the recent meetings: “The members of the organization who participated in the recent meetings came because they were allowed to move with complete freedom, so the responsibility falls on the army commander and his affiliated agencies.”
He explains: “After the October 25 coup, a number of the organization’s members appeared in public, while according to the law they should be detained in one of the prisons in the areas under the control of the army.”
He added: “Allowing members of the Mahul Party to hold public meetings while they were being tried in a criminal case related to one of the most serious crimes stipulated in Sudanese law, is a clear violation.”
Army protection
Many observers blame the army leadership for allowing the movements of Brotherhood members, and point out that the organization’s penetration into the army is one of the most important reasons that provided the wide space that allowed the organization’s members fleeing prisons to organize recent meetings.
Despite the criticism of the army commander Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan Last weekend, the organization held meetings and considered them a threat to the country. However, observers questioned these criticisms, pointing out the identification of the security and justice services with the organization, based on the organization’s influence within the army.
Writer and political analyst Wael Mahjoub considered these statements The proof The last one, in which he criticized the holding of the meeting, was “worthless,” and he asked: “If Al-Burhan objects to the holding of the meeting, then why are the party leaders who escaped from prisons still at large, enjoying protection from the official agencies, leading political and military mobilization, and practicing political activity?” “
He added: “Where were the security and military services that prevent any civil activity and arrest and prosecute those who carry it out?”
Mahjoub told Sky News Arabia that holding the organization’s meeting with the participation of its leaders who escaped from prisons and are wanted by local and international criminal justice “embodies the nature of the current stage that the country is going through, and expresses the multiple plans this war entails.”
Mahjoub warned of the consequences of the policy of identification with the organization and its fronts, and said, “Leaving the field open to the organization represents a threat to the civil forces and an imminent danger to the future of the country and its unity.”
