Storms and strong winds caused havoc in Limassol, with fallen trees closing vital parts of the city and district’s road networks, and shop windows being smashed by the elements.
At least ten incidences of fallen trees have been reported to the police so far since the storms began at around 5pm, with the fire brigade and teams from the Limassol municipality and district government being deployed to attempt to clear the roads.
Meanwhile, storm drains in various parts of the city were opened with the aim of precenting floods, while power cuts were reported in the villages of Kantou and Pissouri.
The weather also impacted the day’s football, with the fixture between Apollon and Apoel, which was due to kick off at 6pm, having thus far being pushed back to 7.30pm by Italian referee Antonio Rapuano, as the pitch is waterlogged.
The rain and hail stretched as far as Paphos, Nicosia, and Morphou, with metal objects having been blown onto the motorway linking Paphos and Nicosia, and landslides having been reported near the villages of Pedoulas and Kampos.
